Tentative list April 2010 - April 2011

Good Morning, Everyone!

To all members who attended last night, thanks for the lively discussion last night - it was fun!  For those of you who didn't a "Happy Belated St. Patrick's Day!"  I was so proud of the group that came to share time with us, but still went to Casey's for the complimentary spread.  I was impressed you took the extra effort.  Thank you, Jeanette, Loretta & Vonda.  It was nice to meet and have you at the group, Vonda!  I included you on the email list; if you would prefer not to be just "reply" to this and let me know.  :-)

Just to recap:  Last night the attending members decided to book selections out into next year and generally would like to stick with the selection chosen.  When you see your name by the selection you get to pick the selection and can generally guide the discussion.  By guide, I mean you could (if you want - no stress) print off discussion questions if available and give a little background. Thus far this is what we have:

April - *The Help by Kathryn Stockett
May - *The Shack by William P. Young (Heather)
June - SALSA!  (Read any book you like and share it with the group)
July - Off
August - ? (Carol)
September - ? (Connie)
October - ? (Maggie)
November - Noah's Compass by Ann Tyler (Janet)
December -  CHRISTMAS BOOK EXCHANGE - (if you like, you can buy a book and exchange it with other members)
January - ? (Jeanette)
February - ? (Loretta)
March - ? (Kathy)
April - ? (Gloria)
May - ? (Vonda if you so choose...)

Please email your selection to me.  If you would like to forfeit picking just let me know that too (Shirley chose this option.)  As the list updates I will resend the information out.

Just a reminder, my role is to reflect what the group wants; therefore, if you receive an email on a topic please share your view that way the decisions will continue to be run by the majority of the attending members. If you are neutral you don't have to email I will just assume.

Key
* before the title indicates that the Mildred Johnson Library owns the item.

Have a wonderful day, ladies!

Happy Friday, Everyone!!!

The Wilkin is the majority pick.  Therefore, it will be at the Wilkin, next Wednesday, March 17th, 5 - 7 pm.  The book is the Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis.  The two suggestions for April, thus far, are The Help and The Shack - we own both.  See below for more information.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett: Book Cover

Synopsis

Be prepared to meet three unforgettable women:

Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.

Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.

Minny, Aibileen's best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody's business, but she can't mind her tongue, so she's lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town...

The Shack by William P. Young: Book Cover

Synopsis

A kidnapped daughter is presumed dead, and when her grieving father receives a letter, apparently from God, inviting him to the scene of the crime, he can't help but go.  What he finds there will change his world forever.

Let me know if your vote is for one of these or if you have another to add to the list.  :-)

FYI

The Help sounds interesting.   The St. Pat's Party sounds like fun but we have Lenten Services so won't be able to attend.  Have fun!!!  Alice

Half the Sky - philanthropy ideas for you.

Though you might find this link interesting:

On page 18 and 19 of The Good Stuff (link below) Marlene Anderson walked away feeling quite like our group after reading Half the Sky.  Please read below:
"I recently read Half the Sky:  Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide by Nicholas Kristof and
Sheryl WuDunn (Knopf, 2009).  After reading the book, I came away with a new determination to do what I can to improve the lives of others. I was also inspired to share some websites related to activism and human rights, microfinance, and charitable giving...."
For the rest of the article with website ideas please use the direct link to the March 2010 issue of The Good Stuff (pgs. 18 & 19) at http://www.ndla.info/Good_Stuff/gsmarch10.pdf

Re: March location idea

Ok, have a few options out there with about an even tie as of now.  I called the Pavilion and they probably going to offer corn beef and cabbage plus green beer.  Like we didn't have enough options.  Just thought we should get it all out there.  If the location choice is a tie we will default back to the original.  So keep placing your bets ladies and gentlemen until next Wednesday.  :-)

Have a nice weekend!

If you want the best Rueben sandwich in town – it's at Hills 210 Café.   Hills might be a better atmosphere . . .   I can always add the Irish – Meehan.

Since our next meeting would be St. Patrick's Day, a suggestion was brought forth that it would be fun to meet at Casey's Bar for their Reuben sandwiches.  They thought at 5:00 it should still be quiet enough to have a short meeting?  Just a thought.

What does everyone think?

Please send me what you think prior to March 10th so I can let everyone know if we have a change in location.

Thanks!

RE: March location idea

If you want the best Rueben sandwich in town – it’s at Hills 210 Café.   Hills might be a better atmosphere . . .   I can always add the Irish – Meehan.

Sounds fun to me. Does this mean that the smoke smell is finally gone from the building?  Replaced by an Irish Spring fragrance???   Maggie

Thanks!

Tina

Re: March location idea

Due to the smoke, another idea was presented to go to the Wilkin for green beer.  Just adding it in the mix.  Again let me know your preference by next Wednesday.  :-)
