September's read

Good morning, fellow book group members!

Last week we met on Tuesday for book group…great discussion to sit and listen to.  J  Thanks Carol for the selection.  The overall feeling was a “sideways thumb” as we use to say on our old web page.  By the way the restaurant’s name is Niblick’s Bar & Grill (correction to the last email).

Comments discussed:

·         One of the interesting comments interjected was the possibility that some of the potency of the book might have been lost in translation.  Interesting thought…things that make you go hmmmm.

·         how the author used violence to get the point across.

·         How indicative of real life it was.

September to May, New day, same time.

·         The vote is in and the group majority is for the third Wednesday of each month, starting in September.

·         So the next day and time is September 15, 2010 from 5 to 7 pm at Niblick’s Bar & Grill (a.k.a. the golf course).

·         Please remind me to have us discuss the location next time.  J

September’s read is…Sara’s Key.   This book is chosen by Loretta; Loretta was switched up from February as the next open spot in our list  since Connie opted not to select a title.  Presently, Mildred Johnson Library does not own this title – it is on order.  Therefore, other members who own the book offered to share.  Could the members who own a book send an email to the group.  Then the other members can know who to ask to borrow.  I will leave the scheduling to the group.

Sarah's Key [Book]

By Tatiana de Rosnay - St. Martin's Griffin (2008) - Paperback - 320 pages - ISBN 0312370849

A "New York Times" bestseller. Paris, July 1942: Sarah, a ten year-old girl, is brutally arrested with her family by the French police in the Vel' d'Hiv' roundup, but not before she locks her younger brother in a cupboard in the family's apartment, thinking that she will be back within a few hours.Paris, May 2002: On Vel' d'Hiv's 60th anniversary, journalist Julia Jarmond is asked to write an article about this black day in France's past. Through her contemporary investigation, she stumbles onto a trail of long-hidden family secrets that connect her to Sarah. Julia finds herself compelled to retrace the girl's ordeal, from that terrible term in the Vel d'Hiv', to the camps, and beyond. As she probes into Sarah's past, she begins to question her own place in France, and to reevaluate her marriage and her life. Tatiana de Rosnay offers us a brilliantly subtle, compelling portrait of France under occupation and reveals the taboos and silence that surround this painful episode. Tatiana de Rosnay was born in the suburbs of Paris and is of… more »

Thank you and have a nice day!

This is a place of mystery...a sanctuary. Every book, every volume you see here has a soul. The soul of the person who wrote it and of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it. RE: Book group

Wonderful book members,

We have 4 that will attend and 4 that will not be able to.  That is a sound enough number to go forward.  J

Remember it is 5 to 7 at the golf club restaurant – Niblets I think; I'm never sure of the name, for some reason, it just does not resonate with me.  We will try to sit outside on this nice…dare I say…"fall-like" day.  Happy fall-like day!

p.s.  pictures are delayed to next month – don't be so sad…our time will come.  J

Oh!  I am sorry to have to miss the group discussion, also!  Especially since it was your selection, Carol, I wanted to hear more and discuss more with you.  This story is most likely common fodder for social workers, but I was surprised by the amount of sex and violence used/needed to satisfy a person's loneliness, boredom, curiosity, hurt and anger- and were there any characters in the novel who didn't use others for their own selfish means?  Can anyone tell me why the newspaper guy was hiding his identity to begin with and why was he hiding his relationship with his son at all?  Am I so naïve, or was this guy thinking about bedding the young, unfortunate subject of the novel from the moment she set foot inside his office (ie met him?)?  And therefore didn't want her to know his family situation???  Thanks everyone

I'll miss you and the discussion, but would love to hear from you.  Maggie

Hello everyone!

Regretfully, I will be unable to make it to book group tomorrow night.

Jim's son is in town tomorrow for a meeting – and we haven't seen him for about a year.

I picked this month's selection.  Here's why.  I wanted to pick a new author and an author that most of us may not have read.  Also, the book won an award.  As I searched the new recommended authors at Barnes & Noble, reading the beginning of the first chapter of many books – it is this book that grabbed my attention within the first two pages.

Did I like the book?  I think I would give it a neutral sign – neither thumb up or down.  I thought the ending was a quick turn around – she walks out the door and is all better?  The second thing I noticed somewhere in the middle of reading – it is one long chapter.  (ee cummings – style?)  When I think about this book – I think it is a modern day version of "Catcher in the Rye."

Sorry I will miss the discussion.  Hope to see you next month.

Carol

PS:  Tina, I do not have everyone's e-mail address.  Please send out to everyone in the book group for me.  Thank you.

Hello everyone!

Regretfully, I will be unable to make it to book group tomorrow night.

Jim’s son is in town tomorrow for a meeting – and we haven’t seen him for about a year.

I picked this month’s selection.  Here’s why.

(ee cummings – style?)  When I think about this book – I think it is a modern day version of “Catcher in the Rye.”

Sorry I will miss the discussion.  Hope to see you next month.

Carol

PS:  Tina, I do not have everyone’s e-mail address.  Please send out to everyone in the book group for me.  Thank you.

This is a place of mystery...a sanctuary. Every book, every volume you see here has a soul. The soul of the person who wrote it and of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it. Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens.

Re: Mother of Pearl

Hi Tina, Do you know who has a copy of the book for August.  Is there one at NDSCS library?
Thanks, Jeanette

Good afternoon, ladies!

Two titles to dig around for in your home:

·         Mother of Pearl by Melinda Haynes

·         Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates

Just let me know if you have them.

Thank you, as always,

Tina

The next meeting is scheduled for the third Tuesday, which is August 17th, 2010. This is opening week for all of us here at the college.

Starting in September, do we want to keep Tuesday throughout the year or go back to Wednesday?  Please send me your thoughts prior to the next meeting.

Fyi – Leslie will be visiting our group on August 17th to take some casual shots for the Blog and for the display area in the library.  J

Enjoy this beautiful day!
