I won’t be there tonight. Below are my recent “salsa” reads.
War Horse by Michael Morpurgo -- I recommend this book. (****)
Told from the horse’s perspective, the author takes us through the life of a horse and his owners. We see life through the thoughts and feelings of Joey, the horse. The reader experiences his joys, sorrows and courage as his life takes a variety of turns through different owners – some situations being a normal, happy environment for him and others being very stressful and dangerous. The book shows us the emotional ties made by Joey with some of his owners and his anger and distrust with others he encounters on his journey. Telling the story from the horse’s view added so much more to the story for me than if it was told from a person’s perspective.
Room by Emma Donoghue – I had a hard time putting this one down. (*****)
This book is written from the point of view of 5-year-old. His mother was kidnapped and had a child by her captor. The story takes us through his days in their one room home (11x11) and we see how his mother protects him from knowing what is real outside their “room” through the routine she has created for their days and the stories she tells. I found it interesting how the author uses the child, Jack, to almost give a separate life to some of the inanimate objects in the room. The author capitalizes things like Rug, Bed, Wall, Wardrobe and Jack seems to give them great importance in his little world. The character of Jack’s Mother (Ma) protects him and even keeps infancy behaviors (still breast feeding to be sure he gets something to eat) in how she copes and makes a positive environment for her son in an awful situation. Highly recommended.

Good afternoon, everyone!
Book group is tonight at the golf course. A suggestion was made to move it, but due to me not seeing the email until now (sorry) we will keep it at the golf course.
Unfortunately, I will not be attending tonight so please “reply all” so others know you are or are not attending.
We are off in July…so we will see you in August!
Enjoy the group!
