February another change in date to March and RSVP needed

OK, first I want to apologize for the confusion I am about to confer.  That being said, here it is:

Shirley recommended that we attend the Bistro on Thursday for reasons that I agree with so the date has changed again.  This is where the apology from me comes in.  :0)

The Date is: Thursday, March 1, 2012.

So the February meeting will be early in March.  Ironic, right?

RSVP Required:  Please send an RSVP directly to Shirley (Shirley.Fox@ndscs.edu) by Monday February 20th  if you would like to attend.

Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.  The Bistro will be worth it!  Have a great day, ladies!

Hello, hello and good morning!

Thanks Cindy for sending the note to the entire group!  I believe Gloria is next if she still would like it. Will you all send me who also wants to be on the waiting list for a particular title and/or any ILL requests for a certain title?  Thank you, thank you!

And for all of you Ladies who came out to discuss books in sub-zero weather earlier this December – Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

An official warm welcome to Judy P. for her first night attending in person.  It was a pleasure to have you participate.

Great group Wednesday night!!!  Loved the discussion!!!  For Maggie & Gloria, I wanted to pass along the response to the question you posed to the group; it was an overwhelming “yes” the group thought that even through atrocities like the ones that Jimmy experienced could happen and human resilience could still prevail.  I’m happy to hear of the belief in the power of the human spirit.  :0)   Thank you to Maggie & Gloria for that great discussion point.

Those in attendance were:   Judy P., Loretta, Cindy S., Tina, Shirley, Jodi, Cindy B., Jeanette, and Kathy H.

FYI – The February the group will be attending the River Valley Inn for an evening of Bistro of dining.  We will try to get the time of 5 to eat and then move to another location (Shirley, you will take care of this?) to discuss.

Note:  DATE CHANGE in February to February 29th.  The book is Still Alice by Lisa Genova.  Shirley, can you line this up for us??  If not, just let me know.  Happy early Valentine’s Day, Ladies!

Also, the read for March is The Last Ember by Daniel Levin!!!  FYI - the March meeting will be back at Prantes!

Still Alice - Feb book

I am done with “Still Alice” and will get it back to the College Library this morning so whomever is next can get it.

It’s a quick read. I did it over the weekend. Good story.

Sorry, I won’t be making it to the gathering tomorrow night.  I read the selection and do have an overriding impression which has to do with the believability of the story.  I keep wondering if it is, indeed, possible for someone to experience what Jimmy did through his early family life and later time in prison and still be able to emerge sane, law abiding and non-violent on the other side?  It’s a question I am also poising to my two daughters, both of whom work as social workers with Public Defenders in major cities. . .it is a question I would also poise for your group discussion.

Sorry to be missing it,

Maggie

Sorry I will not be able to make it either, but I agree with Maggie’s question—one I also considered as I read the book.  Interesting selection.  Have a good discussion.  Gloria

Discussion Questions
Use our LitLovers Book Club Resources; they can help with discussions for any book:

How to Discuss a Book (helpful discussion tips)
Generic Discussion Questions—Fiction and Nonfiction
Read-Think-Talk (a guided reading chart)

Also consider these LitLovers talking points to help get a discussion started for A Place to Stand:

1. To what extent was Jimmy Santiago Baca's youth and young adulthood a result of a broken family? What kind of example does Jimmy's story offer for the nurture vs. nature argument?

2. How did the childcare and legal system fail Jimmy? To what degree was he...or was he not...responsible for his actions?

3. When he headed to prison at the age of 21, was there any reason to think he would become anything other than a hardened criminal? Were there hints that there might be another outcome for Jimmy?

4. Talk about Jimmy's steps toward redemption? What was the turning point or points? Who helped him along the way? What kind of qualities within Jimmy himself made the difference?

5. Jimmy pulls himself back from killing an inmate when he hears "the voices of Neruda and Lorca...praising life as sacred and challenging me: How can you kill and still be a poet?" Comment on that passage.

5. In what way did reading literature help Jimmy begin to heal? Same question for Jimmy's writing—how did it help him?

6. Talk about one of Jimmy's early poems: "I am Healing Earthquakes," in which he writes, "a man awakening to the day with a place to stand / And ground to defend." What is the significance of those lines?

6. In a larger sense, how does the written word have the power to remake the personal world? In your own experience, have you ever been moved deeply by reading poetry or prose—or by the process of your own writing—to rethink the way you live your life?

7. To what extent has this memoir opened your eyes to life in prison? What kind of life do prisoners endure? Is there a better system? If so, what would it be?

8. After his release, Jimmy attempted to reconcile with his family, only to witness more horror. How much can one individual endure? (This may or may not be a rhetorical question...it's up to you.)

(Questions by LitLovers. Please feel free to use them, online or off, with attribution. Thanks.)
